Sciatica

Are you experiencing any of the following symptoms?

  • Dull or achy back pain
  • Worsening pain with prolonged sitting or standing
  • Burning or tingling in the leg
  • Difficulty walking or transitioning from sitting to standing
  • Numbness or weakness in the leg
  • Pain when lifting the leg while lying down

Sciatica refers to pain that arises from the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. This condition can result in discomfort in the lower back, buttocks, or tailbone region, as well as radiating pain down the leg. The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the human body, originating from the lower back (lumbar spine) and running down each leg to the back of the knee before branching off into smaller nerves.

Common causes of sciatica include:

  • Spinal disc bulges, herniations, or protrusions
  • Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Piriformis syndrome

How Do Chiropractors Treat Sciatica?

At Malvern Chiropractic Clinic and Melbourne Spine Clinic, our Cox® Certified Chiropractors employ Cox® Flexion-Distraction therapy to treat complex spinal pain conditions, including sciatica, low back pain (LBP), and various disc diseases and injuries. This effective treatment aims to restore pain-free, normal function to spinal joints, discs, and surrounding spinal tissue.

Cox® Flexion-Distraction therapy is a non-invasive, safe, and gentle method for decompressing spinal discs, joints, and spinal nerves. It alleviates the compression and irritation of these highly pain-sensitive structures, leading to a significant reduction in leg pain associated with sciatica.

As stated on the Cox® Technic website:

“One of the most revealing outcomes indicated that flexion-distraction protocols are superior to active exercise protocols to relieve radiculopathy pain, pain that travels down the leg. Flexion-distraction was two and a half times as successful in relieving radiculopathy leg pain.”

Below is a demonstration of Cox® Technic.

At Malvern Chiropractic Clinic and Melbourne Spine Clinic, our Chiropractors leverage the latest research and clinical data to diagnose and treat patients with sciatica and other spinal conditions. Our Certified Cox® Flexion-Distraction and Spinal Decompression Chiropractors provide safe, gentle, non-surgical, doctor-controlled spinal decompression therapy. Cox® Flexion-Distraction is a recognised alternative to spinal surgery for those suffering from sciatica.
