Concussions are caused when there is a blow to the head, neck or body. This can cause the brain to move rapidly inside the skull, causing traumatic injury to the brain.
Concussions can lead to a wide variety of brain-related symptoms. A concussion is a result of microscopic injury to the brain, which more often than not cannot be detected on brain scans; however, it can have a far more significant impact on the injured person than they may realise.
The most common type of concussion results from playing sports, commonly Football, Rugby and Soccer, which can include children as well as adults. Concussions can also result from certain recreational activities, including skiing, skating, snowboarding, water skiing, BMX, cycling, go-karting, hockey (ice and turf), basketball, cricket, baseball, and netball.
Concussions are not just sport-related injury, though. They can be sustained just about anywhere, our workplaces, in a road accident as a driver, passenger, rider or even as a pedestrian. A concussion that occurs as a result of road trauma can be either direct (caused by a strike, blow or jolt to the head) or indirect (whiplash-related trauma).
How do Chiropractors diagnose concussions?
Chiropractors at Malvern Chiropractic Clinic and Melbourne Spine Clinic are qualified in the Complete Concussions, CCMI Baseline Testing Protocol.
Diagnosis of concussions needs to be thorough and exacting. Concussions are an almost invisible trauma, and symptoms can last anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks post-injury. No two concussions are the same and can affect individuals differently, which is why it is essential to diagnose and treat each person carefully, individually and safely. Each concussion assessment focuses on:
- Clinical Information: tracking symptoms and functionality in relation to the injury.
- Neuro-cognitive testing: which tests balance, postural stability, reaction time, memory, etc.
- Vestibular-ocular testing: specifically testing the balance and visual systems.
- Cervical spine (neck) assessment: including the neck muscles, nerves, joints and dysfunctions that may be present.

How do Chiropractors assess my concussion progress?
This is called Concussion Baseline Testing. Simply put, your Chiropractor can assess you using a series of physical and computerised tests to measure healthy brain function BEFORE a sports season commences or PRIOR to a concussion injury.
In the event of a suspected concussion, our chiropractors use pre existing baseline testing results housed on our world-wide clinical data base to compare and determine the impact of the head or neck injury on the individual. This can help our Practitioners more accurately and objectively track when a person has returned to their pre-injury status and is safe to return to their regular sporting, recreational or work activities.
