Do you experience back, leg, or neck pain or numbness? Perhaps you can’t move freely and perform everyday activities? Our sciatica chiropractor can address these symptoms, often caused by a disc bulge, protrusion, herniation, prolapse, or spinal stenosis. This painful condition is also known as radiculopathy, a pain that travels down the leg. Depending on the spinal level compressed, pain can go down the back of the leg to the foot, down the front or side of the thigh.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica, in short, refers to pain experienced along the path of the sciatic nerve. Often sciatica happens when a herniated disc or a bulging disc puts pressure on the lumbar spine. Often this can cause inflammation, pain and sometimes even numbness in the affected leg. The pain associated with sciatica can be severe, but oftentimes if the pain is in relation to a herniated disc, your pain could clear up in a few weeks with treatment.
How Is Sciatica Diagnosed?
Whilst mild sciatica may go away over time, it’s important to seek treatment if self-care methods don’t relieve your symptoms or if your pain lasts for longer than a week. If your pain is severe or progresses and gets worse, it’s also important to seek a diagnosis from a sciatica Chiropractor.
Sciatica can normally be diagnosed quite simply by assessing your pain and examining your spine and legs. In most sciatica cases, you won’t need any extra tests or scans to diagnose sciatica. If your pain is more serious, your practitioner may want to refer you to get an MRI to rule out any more serious spinal issues.
